Have you ever been hanging out in the city and said to yourself: “damn I wish there was a place where I can get awesome sushi rolls and party to the sounds of some of hip hop dopest djs?” Yea me neither. But sushi chef slash Dj by the name of Fresh Rollman did and it turned out to be a really good idea. Coined after the infamous Big Daddy Kane line “I’m genuine like Gucci, raw like sushi” this East Village creation started out in 2018’ as a small weekly event for sushi and music enthusiasts alike. And has since grown its following into one of those popping “if you know you know” parties where you might run into a few big named celebrities on any given night. I first heard about Raw Like Sushi from one of my DJ friends who’s spun there on a few occasions and had great things to say about it. So I reached out to Lihi Brosh a dope photographer who collaborates with Fresh Rollman on Raw Like Sushi’s Monday night, to let her know I’d be coming to take some photos.
I got there around 12am as the place just started to get packed. PF Cuttin was the guest DJ along with a few others. As the night went on I ate some really good sushi. Danced a little. Ran into a few people I haven’t seen in a while and met some cool regulars. I also got a bunch of great shots of party goers and Bombay Sapphire (you know the vibes). Raw Like Sushi is one of the most unique hip hop party concepts I’ve come across in a while. New Yorkers always find cool new ways to blend cultures together and this fits right in there. If you’re interested in checking it out, the party takes place every Monday 10pm-2am at Studio151 in Alphabet City.
